Apple Will Likely Use Its Own 5G Modem With iPhone SE 4

Although the M series and Bionic series processors are important steps for Apple in terms of maintaining its independence from the outside, they are seen as baby steps compared to other companies. For example, its biggest rival Huawei introduced the processor and 5G connection chip in a single chipset (Kirin 990) 5 years ago. In the years since, Apple tried this but gave up due to inefficiency problems. This situation may finally change with the iPhone SE 4.

According to Ming-Chi Kuo, one of the reliable sources on Apple, Apple is expected to ship 35-40 million devices with its own 5G modem next year. This number is expected to increase to 90-110 million units in 2026 and 160-180 million units in 2027. He also stated that this development will have a major impact on Qualcomm’s 5G chip shipments and licensing revenues.

In July, Kuo said two iPhone models would be released in 2025 with Apple’s own 5G modem. These include the iPhone SE 4, which is expected to be released in the first quarter of next year, and the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air, which is likely to be released in the third quarter of 2025.

Apple has always aimed to maintain full control over its hardware ecosystem. Developing its own modem would give the company more freedom in its integrated design, potentially affecting the iPhone’s network performance.

On the other hand, there are also rumors that Apple is planning to add WiFi and Bluetooth features to this chipset and do the whole job with a single chipset. This could improve battery life and overall device efficiency.

As for Qualcomm, the chipmaker has a licensing agreement with Apple that runs through March 2027. However, if Kuo’s assumptions are correct, Qualcomm could lower its revenue expectations on Apple’s side as Apple ramps up production of its own modem.

Although many of the company’s attempts have failed so far, the company has stepped on the gas again and they may be able to achieve this in the coming years.
